Description
A 225-year-old mug of Gus-Khrustalny is identical to a mug #597 125 years to the Urshelsky glass factory, both in shape and in terms of geometrical parameters. Therefore, we believe that it is made in Urschel. And two years later, this form, made to celebrate the anniversary of the city, was used to make souvenir mugs for the anniversary of the plant itself.
Folk etymology connects the origin of the name of the river Goose with the name of the bird. Toponymists believe that the Goose is not a bird, but the changed Finno-Ugric "Kuusi" - spruce, spruce. Given that the river flows through the forest Meshchera region, where spruce really grows in large numbers, and Meshchera itself is the name of a Finno-Ugric tribe, this version looks quite convincing. The settlement (Husskaya parish) is mentioned in documents of the XVII century. To prevent predatory destruction of forests in Central Russia, the Government adopted a decree on the closure of a number of enterprises located 100 miles away from Moscow. Among the closed enterprises was the glass factory of the merchant Akim Maltsov in Mozhaisk district.
Then in 1756, the Maltsov merchants in the Shivorovo gorge on the Gus River began the construction of a glass manufactory, which gave rise to the famous Gusevsky Crystal Factory and the name of the city "Gus-Crystal". Some of the workers from the former enterprise were also transferred there. Therefore, the villagers initially differed in their worldview and way of life from the indigenous population of the region, this difference has been preserved to this day. The relocation of another part of the same plant to the lands of Bryansk district marked the beginning of the Dyatkovo Crystal Factory, which was no less famous later.
Now about the emblem of the city. At the end of the 18th century, when most of the coats of arms of Russian cities were adopted under Empress Catherine II, Gus-Khrustalny was not yet a city, and therefore did not receive an official coat of arms. The emblem of the city was formed already in the Soviet period, primarily with the development of the tourist route “Golden Ring of Russia”. In Soviet times, there was an unofficial coat of arms of the city, known for the souvenir badges of 1968: a golden goose taking off in a black field. Such a coat of arms is depicted on this circle. Perhaps it was borrowed from the trademark (1963 - 1972 and 1972 - 1982 in two slightly different versions) of the Gusev crystal factory.
Later, another emblem project was produced on souvenir badges: in the upper part of the shield is the emblem of the Vladimir region, in the lower part, in the azure field, a silver flying goose. The modern version since 1999 - “The coat of arms of the municipality of Gus-Khrustalny is a quadrangular, with rounded lower corners, a heraldic shield pointed in the tip with a goose in profile, with raised wings on a red and blue background.”
